The Mysterious Door

January 2nd, 2010

When on our way back from the Natural History Museum we found a door at 72nd street. Now this door wasn’t a normal door…it seemed out of place and distinctly mysterious.

Maybe there was a dragon behind it, watching and waiting for an innocent 1 train to come scuttling by. It would munch and crunch its way through the metal, and discard the bones of the terrified public onto the tracks; and hence would cause havoc and backlog in journeys.

Or maybe it’s a troll on a mission to chew it’s way through the power lines. He likes the shocks on his teeth as he breaks through the cables. Cackling he scuttles through the mysterious door, avoiding detection from the general public and leaving devastation in his wake.

However there is no evidence to suggest any of these things and these are merely the ramblings of me. However if anyone else has any other suggestions as to what could reside beneath then please do let me know.

But doesn’t it look like it should open with a key?

For the Picky People…

January 2nd, 2010

…this post entails lots of photos of New York rather than pictures of food.

However, we went and wandered round the Museum of Natural History. There were dinosaurs and teeth. But it was extremely tiring so we were quite glad to be back at home.

We got supplies for sausage and mash/chips and found out how much American potatoes fail…they tasted fine, but looked like scrambled eggs.

Tomorrow is Broadway day and so we went out and found a suitable restaurant (just round the corner from the Gershwin theatre) for our pre-theatre meal.

We’ve not got a huge amount planned for tomorrow daytime since it’s an awesome day for Suzi…Wicked baby! Plus we are recording the new Doctor Who off BBC America whilst we’re out.

Until tomorrow: here are some pictures off dinosaurs, Central Park, the apartment and Times Square.

Sushi

January 1st, 2010

Okay so we didn’t end up getting any Japanese food yesterday as somehow Harlem fails at it. However today is a new day, and on our travels we have found a Japanese restaurant; Tenzan.

So we all got random lunch stuff and have been chowing down on California rolls, tempura and eel cucumber rolls. All washed down with some fresh, cold sake.

Then we’ll be heading over to the museum of natural history. But for now…sushi!

Sherlock Holmes

December 31st, 2009

Went to the Magic Johnson Cinema in Harlem to see Sherlock Holmes. The film was actually really good.

I’ve eaten a whole box of Milk Duds and now cannot even look at them. Waffle has had a salt overdose from the popcorn and Edmund ate a whole large bag of popcorn to himself.

On the way home we saw a white outline of a body, partially hidden by snow. We’re hoping it was kids messing around…

We’ve decided that New York would be a bad place for a drive by as you’d get stuck at traffic lights…unless you’re turning right.

Hoping to get some Japanese food for tea before we head out to Times Square later on. No idea where we’ll be stood but it should be awesome.

Catch you in 2010, Happy New Year!

Snow Day!

December 31st, 2009

Woke up this morning to find it snowing quite heavily. Apparently it will turn into rain later but who cares, we’ll be in Times Square ringing in the new year (5 hours after you lot in Britain).

But when I opened the back door to take some lovely snowy photos for you guys, I managed to “break” the door. It wouldn’t close, not even when Edmund tried pulling it.

So we went and munched our respective breakfasts (buttery toast for me and icky Cheerios for Edmund) trying to think of a plan. I suddenly had a brilliant idea! Without telling Edmund (who was now getting on his shoes to go outside and fiddle with it) I pushed the door open further, and slowly it began to close.

Apparently brains work better after toast rather than Cheerios.

Toast 1 – Cheerios 0

On another note we still don’t know what we’re doing before Times Square this evening…best get on that.

30th December

December 31st, 2009

Once we left the diner, we ended up in the huge department store Macys. It was extremely shiny and busy as it’s sale time. Edmund wanted some special gloves but they didn’t have any in stock.

On our way to Macys we saw the Empire State Building in it’s awesomeness. But since we were tired we didn’t go in.

We then made our way back to Times Square for some quick margaritas before getting the subway back to Harlem.

Once there we decided to go find some booze at a liquor store. We then found the heart of Harlem and wondered how we could have missed this in our exploration yesterday.

There’s a H&M store about a minutes walk from the apartment and a Dunkin Donuts even closer.

We then found a wine store and got a couple of bottles before I sent the boys off to the supermarket for beer.

Getting back to the apartment we decided to get pizza and chillax, drinking Corona Light and watching Bones.

Oh and on the side of a bus in Times Square I saw an advert for the new season of Project Runway on 14th January. Yay! But sadly I didn’t get a picture of it…ah well I’ll just have to stalk it now…

Diner

December 30th, 2009

We made a list this morning of all the places we want to visit whilst we’re here; Central Park was on today’s agenda.

It wasn’t as cold today and so it was perfect weather for wandering around the park. There were ducks and a lot of the water was still frozen over.

It was decided that we needed brunch and so we wandered along Madison Ave and found a diner; which is where we are now.

Waffles and ham with root beer for brunch.

Birthday

December 29th, 2009

My first ever flying experience went well. We were out of the airport by 8.45 local time and after a caffufel with lifts we found ourselves wandering around a supermarket.

Once twinkies and mountain dew had been purchased we headed to our apartment.

By the time we went to bed we’d been awake for 24 hours…much deserved sleep.

Waking up, I forgot it was my birthday and was surprised when I was referred to as the “birthday girl”.

We explored a little of the local Harlem area and got on the subway to Times Square. It’s -16 so we’ve wrapped up (thanks for the scarf Mum).

Soon we’ll be heading to 123 Bar to see what it’s like.

Margaritas

December 29th, 2009

Sat in Chevys, a Mexican restaurant near times square. Ordered loads of food and a spicy mango margarita.

I want to be suitably buzzed before going back outside into the cold.

Shiny Plane

December 28th, 2009

Waiting to board our shiny plane… Blog you all on the other side.
